Apartment abbreviations in Japan are simple once you know the logic, but choosing the right layout is more than just counting rooms. Your cooking habits, remote-work needs, furniture, and length of stay can all affect which layout feels comfortable.

1R vs 1K vs 1LDK in Japan: Which Apartment Layout Is Right for You?

1R: simple and compact

A 1R is a one-room layout where the kitchen is part of the main living space. It is often one of the more affordable options and can work well for students, short stays, or people who spend most of their time outside the home.

The tradeoff is that cooking smells, storage, and furniture placement can be more noticeable in one open room.

1K and 1DK: more separation

A 1K separates the kitchen from the main room, often with a door or hallway. This small separation can make a big difference for cooking and privacy.

A 1DK generally provides a larger dining/kitchen space. It can be a useful middle ground for someone who wants more space without moving into a full 1LDK.

1LDK: flexibility for longer stays

A 1LDK has a separate bedroom and a living/dining/kitchen area. It is popular with couples, professionals who work from home, and residents who want a more comfortable long-term setup.

The monthly rent is often higher, but the extra separation can improve day-to-day quality of life.

Quick Tip: Square meters can matter more than the label. A spacious 1K may feel better than a very compact 1LDK, so always check the floor plan.
